Today, the proof comes after the money.
Each bank on a payment’s route screens it for itself, and the evidence stays inside that bank. When a correspondent, an auditor or a supervisor queries a payment, the answer is assembled after the fact from internal records.
Why now
- Payments carry more data
- ISO 20022 and the revised FATF Recommendation 16 put fuller, structured information about who pays and who is paid into cross-border payments.
- Sanctions compliance: the issue most often cited
- In the Financial Stability Board’s report of December 2024 on aligning data frameworks for cross-border payments, complying with sanctions obligations is the issue most frequently cited as affecting the cost and speed of those payments.
- Supervisors ask for evidence
- A bank that relies on a check must show it, to its correspondents, its auditors and its supervisor, sometimes years later. Today that evidence is rebuilt from internal records.
- Nothing travels
- Each later bank on the route checks blind to the earlier check. No evidence of the check goes with the payment, and no one outside the bank can verify it. That is the gap Xattestation is built to fill.

In production, Xattestation is designed to run in each jurisdiction as a company of that jurisdiction, on its own systems in that country and under its law. The payment data a node screens stays in its country; between nodes only public keys travel, so a record made in one country can be verified in another. Where it runs.
